“A Skilful Fakir with many spells hidden in his magical tote of hues. Arjuna’s dizzying array of experimentation enthrals the spectator in his exclusive prism of diurnal rhythm & mundane occurrences, capturing the sacred essence of lived experience.

Arjuna celebrates 30 years of his career as a practising fine artist in 2025, marking the Perl Jubilee anniversary of his first solo exhibition held in 1995.

Arjuna’s SketchBook Practice

The quotidian act of studying one's immediate environment — whether through en plein air observation or within the contemplative hush of the studio (in the case of Arjuna, his roaming studio may also be found in his living room or at some inconspicuous corner — constitutes a vital substratum of the professional sketchbook practice. For the fine artist who sustains parallel journals in both pastel & charcoal, pencil & pen a-like, this sustained visual inquiry becomes a kind of praxis: a recursive dialogue between perception and material. The interplay of chromatic saturation and tonal nuance as registered in a myriad of spontaneous mediums allows the artist to oscillate between impression and essence — between the ephemeral hues of the lived world & the distilled chiaroscuro of form. Such a practice is not merely preparatory but foundational. It anchors the artist’s oeuvre in a rigorous phenomenological engagement with place, light, breath, and temporality. Through this ritualised étude, the sketchbook transcends its utilitarian role to become a site of ongoing revelation.
